
Keeping IR Heaters Safe When Things Get Wet
Putting infrared lamps in a damp spot—think steamy bathrooms or humid barns—is a bit like playing with fire. When moisture settles on your electrical contacts, it creates a bridge for the current to jump. That’s how you end up with shorts, sparks, and some very unpleasant shocks. To stop that from happening, we focus on two things: the barrier and the seal.
How we actually keep the water out
A single plastic shell isn’t going to cut it here. You need layers. We start with a housing rated IP65 or better. In plain English? It means the enclosure is tight enough to keep out dust and can handle a spray of water without a single drop hitting the live terminals. But we don’t stop there. We use high-temp silicone gaskets and something called epoxy potting at the wire entries. Potting basically fills every tiny gap with a non-conductive resin. It locks out the humidity completely. If the moisture can’t touch the copper, the circuit stays safe. To make sure it actually works, we run a “high-pot” test. We push the insulation to its limit with voltage spikes just to prove it won’t break under pressure.
The heat struggle
Here’s the tricky part: waterproof seals are great at keeping water out, but they’re also great at trapping heat. If you seal a lamp too tight, you risk “heat soak,” which can fry your filament. It’s a balancing act. To handle this, we use borosilicate quartz tubes and ceramics. These materials can take the hit of heating up and cooling down over and over again without cracking. And please, check your wires. Use TFZN or silicone-insulated cables. Standard PVC is a disaster in these environments—it’ll either melt from the IR heat or crack from the humidity.
Getting the install right
Doing the wiring correctly is half the battle. Every chassis needs to be bonded to a solid ground. We also put GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) right into the power chain. If the insulation ever fails, the GFCI kills the power in a fraction of a second. When you’ve got high-wattage heat and water in the same room, that’s the only way to sleep soundly at night.
